Non-surgical stomach reduction: the methods compared

Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass or Weight Doctors SLEEVE®: how the stomach reduction procedures work, how they differ and which option suits whom.

GermanyMedically reviewed byPriv.-Doz. Dr. med. Dörte WichmannSpecialist in visceral surgery & expert in endobariatricsLast updated:

Why consider a stomach reduction?

Being overweight, and especially severe excess weight (obesity), can lead to serious health problems:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Sleep apnoea
  • joint problems
  • reduced quality of life
  • emotional strain

If changing your diet and exercising have not brought the results you hoped for, a stomach reduction can be one way forward. Studies show that obesity surgery procedures not only help with weight loss but can also markedly improve many related conditions.

What makes the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® special

Alongside the surgical procedures, there is now stomach reduction without an operation: the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® reduces the stomach endoscopically, that is, during a gastroscopy.

With surgery

Surgical procedures: effective, but with risks

Weight Doctors® offer both operations as Weight Doctors BARIATRICS®, mainly for higher BMI values.

  1. Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y)The stomach is reduced to a small pouch of 50–100 ml and the small intestine is rerouted. Advantages: marked weight loss and, often, a rapid improvement in diabetes. Disadvantages: a surgical procedure with small scars, 1–3 nights in hospital, a longer recovery period, a higher surgical risk, the risk of nutrient deficiency and possible dumping syndrome.
  2. Gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy)Around 75–80% of the stomach is surgically removed. Advantages: good weight loss and less of the hunger hormone ghrelin. Disadvantages: a surgical procedure, not reversible, possible reflux (heartburn) and a longer recovery phase.
Without surgery

The Weight Doctors SLEEVE®

With the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®, the stomach reduction is carried out endoscopically, without incisions and without scars. A special endoscope is passed through the mouth into the stomach. Using fine instruments, the stomach wall is folded from the inside and stitched, so that the stomach volume falls by up to 75%. Weight Doctors® offer both the temporary stomach reduction with the gastric balloon and the permanent one with the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®.

  1. pose® 3.0 Double HelixThe further development of the first permanent stomach reduction without surgery: the stomach is reduced by up to 70–75%, satiety can set in earlier and last longer – with less strain and improved stability. More on pose® 3.0.
  2. OverStitch NXT™The nickel-free technique with a comparable reduction of up to 75% – also suitable if you have a nickel allergy. More on OverStitch NXT™.

Advantages of the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®

  • no surgical procedure, no incisions, no scars
  • outpatient procedure with a short recovery time of 3–4 days
  • effect intended to last
  • complications are rare
  • modular structure: if needed, the stomach can be reduced further later on
  • no lasting restrictions
  • quality of life can improve noticeably after just a few weeks
