What is Weight Doctors® GLP-1 pharmacotherapy?
Our medically led treatment concept for weight loss without a procedure. Your specialist assesses your health situation, prescribes – where medically appropriate – a modern GLP-1 preparation and supports you with monthly progress checks. The basis is the Weight Doctors® MEMBERSHIP; it is structured independently of any particular medication.
How does the therapy work?
It begins with a detailed initial specialist consultation with a careful medical history. If drug therapy is an option, you receive your prescription as an e-prescription for the pharmacy of your choice. After that, your specialist checks weight, tolerability and progress every month and adjusts the dosage if needed.
What forms of administration are there?
The therapy is possible in different forms of administration: as an injection with a pen, which you administer yourself after medical instruction, and – after market launch – in tablet form. Which form of administration and which preparation are suitable for you is decided by your specialist after a medical assessment and discussed with you in detail. How self-administration with the pen works is shown in the step-by-step guide.
Who is the therapy suitable for?
For people with significant excess weight – as a rule from a BMI of 30, and from 27 with weight-related comorbidities such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes. It is not suitable, among other cases, during pregnancy and breastfeeding or with certain pre-existing conditions. If it is not an option for you, we will show you other paths.
How long does the therapy last?
The therapy is individually designed to last 3–12 months. This leaves enough time to establish it calmly, to monitor your progress closely and to change your eating and exercise habits permanently. Whether it continues afterwards, you discuss with your specialist towards the end.
How quickly do I get my prescription?
Our aim is for your e-prescription to be ready, as a rule, within 24 hours of the medical consultation – digitally and without postal dispatch. You redeem it at a pharmacy of your choice, in person or online.
Do I have to come to a clinic for this?
Not necessarily. Thanks to video consultation, e-prescription and the Weight Doctors® App, the therapy is also possible by telemedicine. If you prefer to come in person, we will advise you at our locations.
How much can I lose with GLP-1 therapy?
On average, a weight reduction of around 15% is possible. How much it will be in your case depends on your medical situation and on how you change your diet and exercise. Results vary from person to person.
What happens if I do not tolerate my medication?
Contact us at any time if side effects occur. Your specialist will then review the dosage, preparation and form of administration and adjust your treatment plan – or end the therapy in a controlled way. Do not stop your medication on your own without consulting a doctor. In the event of acute symptoms or signs of a severe allergic reaction, please seek medical help immediately.
Can I combine the therapy with other treatments?
Yes. It can be used before, during or after a stomach reduction or stabilise your weight as part of Weight Doctors® RESHAPE. Whether and how a combination makes sense in your case, you discuss with your specialist.
Is there an alternative without medication?
Yes: Weight Doctors® hydroGMA is an endoscopic treatment of around 30 minutes without an incision, which acts on the hunger hormone ghrelin – entirely without medication. Whether it is an option for you, we clarify in the consultation.
What happens when the therapy ends?
Towards the end, you discuss with your specialist whether the therapy will be continued or tapered off in a controlled way; on request, an extension by a further year is possible. What matters afterwards, you can read in the article GLP-1 explained honestly.
What does the therapy cost?
The prerequisite is the Weight Doctors® MEMBERSHIP; the fee is from €599 for 3 months or €1,399 for 12 months. Included are, among other things, the initial specialist consultation, the medical review of an individual prescription, the monthly progress checks and the Membership tools – from the app, scales and 3D Bodyscan (depending on location) to the recipe book with nutrition guide, webinars, media library and community. The medical services are billed under the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ). The prescribed medication is not included in the fee; you obtain it through your pharmacy. Statutory health insurers do not currently cover the costs; private health insurers cover the GOÄ services depending on the policy.
Does German health insurance pay for GLP-1 therapy?
German statutory health insurers do not currently cover the costs. Private health insurers may cover the medical services under the GOÄ depending on the policy; you obtain the medication separately through your pharmacy.
