What German statutory health insurance covers – and what it does not
Before an operation covered by German health insurance, the guidelines require a structured preparation programme – the multimodal programme (MMK). Over around six months, it prepares you medically, nutritionally and psychologically for the procedure and documents your progress. We organise all appointments for you in Hamburg. Important to know: the MMK and the private medical pre- and post-treatment examinations are self-pay services – during preparation, the health insurer only covers the medical briefing.
Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, there is a chance that the German statutory health insurer will cover the operation at the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim, including the hospital stay – the decision rests with your health insurer. We support preparation and aftercare close to home in Hamburg. There is no advance application: before the operation, we check all the requirements for the health insurer, and billing takes place directly after the operation.

Self-pay services are the MMK, private medical pre- and post-treatment examinations and the specialist preliminary examination and aftercare of the Weight Doctors® Membership, as well as gastric balloon, GLP-1 therapy and nutrition coaching. For stomach reduction there is no advance application: billing takes place directly after surgery.
