How the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® works

The Weight Doctors SLEEVE® is an endoscopic stomach reduction that requires no surgical operation at all. During a gastroscopy, an endoscope is passed through the mouth into the stomach. With patented anchor and suture systems, the stomach wall is specifically grasped from the inside, folded and sutured so that the stomach is gathered in length and in width.

In this way the stomach becomes narrower and shorter and takes on the shape of a gastric sleeve; depending on the variant, the stomach volume falls by 55–60% or by 70–75%. Even small amounts can make you feel full, the feeling of hunger can subside and the feeling of fullness can last longer. The stomach reduction is thus an aid: it makes it easier to eat less and to stick to a new way of eating.

Our aim with every procedure: the greatest possible chance of success with the least possible burden. Endoscopic procedures leave the body externally intact; recovery is therefore generally quick. For the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®, we use two technologies:

Who is the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® suitable for?

Severe excess weight (obesity) weighs on body and soul. It can lead to serious related conditions and also limit social life. Many of those affected want nothing more than to lose weight – but on their own, they often lack the strength to achieve it permanently.

A permanently lower weight can have a beneficial effect on related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or joint complaints. Whether and when medication such as insulin, blood pressure medication or painkillers can be adjusted is decided solely by your treating doctor.

For a long time, endoscopic stomach reduction was suitable above all for smaller weight-loss goals. With Extended Sleeve and Extended Sleeve+, it is now also an option for considerably higher weight-loss goals – precisely for those who often suffer most from their weight. For the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®, the following applies:

How the treatment works

What results are possible?

For the procedures of the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®, clinical studies report an average loss of more than half of the excess weight after 6–7 months; the BMI falls considerably as a result. Which of the two technologies we work with plays a minor role here – what matters is that the variant suits your needs and expectations.

Results vary from person to person. The stomach reduction is a great opportunity, but not a foregone conclusion: success comes only as far as you adhere to the guidelines of the healing phase and follow the recommendations of nutrition counselling and exercise therapy. Weight Doctors SLEEVE® or stomach surgery?

For those with even bigger goals, there is Weight Doctors BARIATRICS®: gastric sleeve surgery and the gastric bypass using minimally invasive keyhole surgery. Unlike with the SLEEVE, the stomach is altered from the outside, in the abdominal cavity: through a few small punctures, the surgeon introduces a camera and fine instruments and separates off the larger part of the stomach.

With the gastric bypass, an even smaller stomach pouch is created in addition, and part of the small intestine is rerouted; the operation takes 120–150 minutes. What does the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® cost – and what does the German health insurance pay?

The Weight Doctors SLEEVE® is available from €5,500, including private medical preliminary examination and aftercare – with pose® 3.0 Double Helix as well as with OverStitch NXT™. Without cost coverage by German health insurance, it is possible as a self-pay service.

Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, there is a chance of cost coverage by your German statutory health insurance. A 6-month multimodal programme (MMK) usually comes first; the MMK itself is not a service provided by the health insurance.

There is no prior application: before the procedure, we check all the requirements for you, and billing follows directly after the procedure. You do not have to speak to your German health insurer. This is how the costs are divided:

What is the exact process for a Weight Doctors SLEEVE®?

After consultation and information, your stomach is gathered from the inside under general anaesthesia during a gastroscopy; as a rule you go home after approx. 4–5 hours. This is followed by 4–6 weeks of liquid diet and a step-by-step build-up of your diet with accompanying coaching – the individual steps are set out above under “How the treatment works”.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure itself takes 30–60 minutes. It takes place under general anaesthesia and in a single session, by gastroscopy through the mouth – there is no incision in the abdominal wall.

Will I have pain after the procedure?

Discomfort is generally mild. Because the stomach is gathered from the inside, there are no wounds on the abdominal wall. Temporary side effects in the first days, sometimes weeks, are normal until the body has recovered; you are usually socially presentable after 3–4 days.

Do I have to stay overnight in the clinic?

Usually not: the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® is generally carried out as an outpatient procedure, and you stay for approx. 4–5 hours. At the Weight Doctors® Nationalklinik in Wertheim, an overnight stay is planned and included in the price.

Who is the endo sleeve suitable for?

For people who want to lose weight permanently, escape the yo-yo effect and achieve stable results in the long term – without classic surgery. The endo sleeve is recommended at a BMI of 27–40; for higher values, there are Extended Sleeve and Extended Sleeve+.

Which technologies are used for the endo sleeve?

Two endoscopic technologies are available: pose® 3.0 Double Helix and the nickel-free OverStitch NXT™. Both reduce the stomach gently from the inside, without incisions and without scars.

What advantages does pose® 3.0 technology offer?

With pose® 3.0 Double Helix, the stomach is reduced entirely endoscopically from the inside – with no incision on the abdomen, without scars and generally as an outpatient. In the case of a nickel allergy, the nickel-free OverStitch NXT™ is available instead.

What distinguishes the endo sleeve from classic stomach surgery?

With the endo sleeve, the stomach remains completely in the body and is gathered from the inside; recovery is generally shorter. With stomach surgery, the operation is performed from the outside using keyhole surgery: with the gastric sleeve, a large part of the stomach is removed; with the gastric bypass, the small intestine is also rerouted. We offer both as Weight Doctors BARIATRICS®.

What weight loss can I achieve with the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®?

It has been observed with all three variants that almost 95% of patients lose a double-digit percentage of their body weight in the first 6 months. How much it is for you depends significantly on your cooperation. Results vary from person to person.

Can you eat normally after the endo sleeve?

Yes. After the healing phase, you build up your diet step by step until you are eating without further restrictions; you do not have to give up solid food permanently. The difference lies in the quantity: the aim is for you to feel full with smaller portions.

Is the stomach reduction permanent?

The gathering is designed for the long term. Because the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® has a modular design, the stomach can be reduced further later if needed with a more restrictive variant. How well the result lasts in the long term depends above all on whether you change your diet and exercise permanently.

What risks are there with the Weight Doctors SLEEVE®?

Complications are rare and can usually be treated conservatively, that is, without further surgical intervention. Post-procedure bleeding at the suture site in the stomach, bruises (haematomas) and injuries to the stomach or oesophagus may occur. Despite its minimally invasive nature, the Weight Doctors SLEEVE® remains a medical procedure with risks, which requires special information and the assessment of whether it is indicated by a specialist.

What does an endo sleeve cost at Weight Doctors in Germany?

The endo sleeve is available from €5,500 – with pose® 3.0 Double Helix as well as with OverStitch NXT™, including private medical preliminary examination and aftercare. All prices at a glance: Costs & prices.

What is included in the price of the endo sleeve?
