Liposuction techniques

Your surgeon will inform you about the techniques in the consultation; you decide together which method is suitable for you.

  • Tumescent liposuction

The most common method: a solution of saline, local anaesthetic and adrenaline numbs the area, reduces bleeding and makes suction easier.

  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound additionally breaks up the fatty tissue.

  • Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL)

Laser additionally breaks up the fatty tissue.

  • Vibration-assisted liposuction (VAL)

The cannula vibrates and so loosens the fatty tissue.

Liposuction at a glance

What you should know before liposuction after weight loss – from the right timing through the procedure and healing to costs and locations.

How liposuction works

After successful weight loss, especially after a bariatric procedure, health and quality of life often improve markedly. But in some areas fatty tissue stubbornly remains – on the abdomen, hips, thighs or upper arms. These deposits are often genetic, and even intensive training and a strict diet do not fully reach them.

In liposuction, this fatty tissue is suctioned out in a targeted way. It removes the remaining fat cells, refines the body contour and makes the success of the weight loss visible. This can also strengthen your sense of well-being in your own body – but it is not a method of weight loss; it is an established building block of body contouring after weight loss.

Your liposuction is part of Weight Doctors® RESHAPE: with an individual treatment plan and support from the first consultation to aftercare.

Who is liposuction suitable for?

Liposuction is recommended above all when, after a bariatric operation or considerable weight loss, individual accumulations of fat remain that cannot be removed through exercise or a change of diet. For the result to last, your weight should be stable for several months and your general health good – and your expectations realistic: it is the silhouette that is shaped, not the weight.

The skin is also decisive. Before the procedure, your specialist checks in a detailed consultation how elastic it is, discusses your goals and what is feasible with you, and informs you about all options for body shaping. Liposuction alone is not always the best path:

A Weight Doctors® member of staff welcomes a patient to her consultation
  • Several zones on the trunkIf the abdomen, flanks and back are to be shaped in one procedure, 360-degree liposuction is the suitable variant.
  • Loose skinIf a lot of skin remains alongside the fat, a tightening procedure may be an option, such as the tummy tuck. For mild excess skin, liposuction can be combined with non-surgical skin tightening: the suction shapes, the tightening with Renuvion gives contour.
  • Painful fat deposits on the legs and armsLipoedema may be behind this. Lipoedema surgery is a separate, specialised procedure for this.

How liposuction works in practice

Depending on the extent, the procedure takes 1.5–3 hours. This is how liposuction proceeds:

Surgeon preparing sterilely for the procedure in the operating theatre
  1. Consultation and planningYour surgeon examines the areas, assesses skin quality and elasticity and explains the techniques. Together you decide which method is suitable for you.
  2. PreparationBefore the procedure, you have a blood test. You receive advice on diet and medication, you refrain from alcohol and nicotine, and you arrange support for the first few days.
  3. ProcedureYou arrive having fasted; your surgeon goes through the procedure with you once more and marks the areas. For smaller areas, local anaesthesia or sedation (twilight sleep) is sufficient; for several zones or a larger extent, general anaesthesia makes sense. Through incisions only a few millimetres small, in inconspicuous places that are easily hidden later, the tumescent solution is introduced first. Then a thin cannula loosens the fatty tissue with even forward and backward movements, and a special vacuum device suctions it out – depending on the method, assisted by ultrasound, laser or vibration. Working carefully and evenly is the most important thing here, so that no uneven contours arise.
  4. After the procedureThe treated areas are dressed with compression bandages or garments, and you stay for a few hours of monitoring until you have recovered well. After local anaesthesia or sedation (twilight sleep), you can usually go home the same day.
  5. AftercareYou wear compression garments around the clock for several weeks. Lighter everyday activities are usually possible after about a week, sport after 4–6 weeks.

After liposuction: healing and aftercare

Compression is decisive for healing: it reduces swelling and bruising, helps the skin adapt to the new contours and prevents uneven results. At Weight Doctors®, you wear Weight Doctors® ShapeWear for this, which is fitted to your body.

Keep the small incisions clean and dry; your doctor will give you precise instructions on wound care and arrange follow-up appointments. This is how healing typically proceeds:

  1. Day of surgeryMonitoringA few hours in the clinic; after local anaesthesia or sedation (twilight sleep), usually home the same day.
  2. first few daysRestNo exertion, but gentle walks – they promote circulation.
  3. approx. 1 weekBack to everyday lifeLighter everyday activities are usually possible again.
  4. afterwardsCompressionWear around the clock for several weeks, take off only to shower.
  5. 4–6 weeksBack to sportStrenuous activities after consulting your doctor.
  6. 3–6 monthsFinal resultThe swelling has subsided, the skin has adapted.

How effective is liposuction after a bariatric procedure?

How well liposuction works after weight loss depends on several factors: on the quality of your skin, on the distribution of the remaining fatty tissue and on your goals. In the best case, the contours become noticeably more even and harmonious. Studies and patients’ experiences show that liposuction can improve the aesthetic result after weight loss; many report greater satisfaction with their body image afterwards. Results vary from person to person.

You will see the first changes after a few weeks, as the swelling subsides; the progress is documented by the Weight Doctors® 3D Bodyscan. The fat cells that have been suctioned out do not come back, so the result can be long-lasting. However, if you later gain a significant amount of weight again, fat is deposited in other places. A stable weight with a balanced diet and regular exercise is therefore the best protection for your new contours. The Weight Doctors® 360° nutrition coaching can help with this.

What to look for when choosing a doctor

Liposuction is a surgical procedure. Choose a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery who specialises in body shaping and in treatments after major weight loss. Check qualifications and certifications, and look for open, trusting communication: your wishes and expectations belong in the conversation just as much as the limits of what is feasible.

At Weight Doctors® RESHAPE, specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery carry out the procedure. In the consultation they explain all options, risks and the course of healing, so that you can make an informed decision.

What does liposuction cost?

What liposuction costs depends on the extent – that is, how many and how large the areas treated are – and on the type of anaesthesia. Costs start at approx. €5,900. You receive an exact cost estimate after the initial medical consultation, for which a fee of €30 applies under the German medical fee schedule (GOÄ).

Health insurance does not cover the costs: liposuction is regarded as a purely aesthetic measure and not as medically necessary, so statutory health insurers in Germany do not pay for it. It is a self-pay service – privately insured or paid for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Weight Doctors® RESHAPE Liposuction

Your question isn’t listed? Your specialist will take time for it during the consultation.

What is liposuction?

A surgical procedure in which excess fatty tissue is suctioned out through small incisions using a thin cannula. The aim is a more attractive, better-balanced body contour, especially in places where fat stubbornly remains after weight loss.

On which parts of the body is liposuction possible?

Typical areas are the abdomen, hips, thighs and upper arms. If several zones around the trunk are to be treated in one procedure, 360-degree liposuction is intended.

Can I lose weight with liposuction?

No. Liposuction removes individual fat deposits in a targeted way and shapes the contour; it does not replace weight loss. If you still want to lose a significant amount of weight, Weight Doctors® has its own routes, such as stomach reduction or GLP-1 pharmacotherapy.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the extent, 1.5–3 hours. Smaller areas can be treated under local anaesthesia or sedation (twilight sleep), larger ones under general anaesthesia.

Do I have to stay in the clinic after liposuction?

That depends on the anaesthesia and the extent. After local anaesthesia or sedation (twilight sleep) you usually go home the same day; after a larger procedure, a short inpatient stay may make sense.

How long do I have to wear compression garments?

Several weeks, and around the clock – you may take it off only to shower. Exactly how long is determined by your doctor after the procedure.

When can I work and exercise again?

Lighter activities are usually possible again after about a week. Wait about 4–6 weeks before sport and physically strenuous work, depending on your doctor’s instructions.

How long does healing take, and when can the result be seen?

Swelling usually subsides within a few weeks. The final result becomes apparent after about three to six months, once the skin has adapted to the new contours. Results vary from person to person. Do not rush the healing process and follow your doctor’s instructions.

What does the result of liposuction depend on?

Above all on the quality and elasticity of your skin, on the distribution of the remaining fatty tissue and on your goals. Your surgeon will discuss with you in the consultation what of this is realistic for you.

What risks and side effects can liposuction have?

As with any surgical procedure, risks and side effects are possible: swelling, bruising, infections and irregular skin contours, less often complications such as thrombosis. Choosing an experienced specialist and careful aftercare can reduce the risk; it is important to follow all medical instructions exactly. Your doctor will inform you about possible risks and complications before the procedure.

Liposuction or tightening – which do I need?

If mainly pockets of fat remain and the skin is still elastic, liposuction is often enough. If, on the other hand, a lot of skin hangs, a tightening procedure such as the tummy tuck or a body lift is necessary; sometimes the combination makes the most sense. The examination in the consultation clarifies this.

Is the result permanent?

The fat cells that have been suctioned out do not grow back. If you keep your weight stable, the new contour is generally maintained. If you gain weight later, however, fat is deposited in other areas.

What does liposuction cost?

Costs start at approx. €5,900 and depend on the extent and the anaesthesia. You receive an exact cost estimate after the initial consultation. All prices at a glance: Costs & prices.

Does German health insurance pay for liposuction?

No, not as an aesthetic procedure. It is different with lipoedema: for lipoedema surgery, cost coverage by German health insurance is possible under certain conditions.
