The thigh lift at a glance

How the thigh lift works

Successful weight loss, particularly after a bariatric procedure such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, is a big step towards a healthier life. For the elasticity of the skin, however, it is a heavy strain: after the loss of considerable amounts of fat, excess skin often remains, especially on the thighs. It can no longer be reduced through diet and exercise.

In a thigh lift (thigh lifting), excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and the skin is tightened, so that a smoother, firmer silhouette can result.

The thigh lift is part of Weight Doctors® RESHAPE, body contouring after weight loss; more about the path afterwards in the article You’ve done it – and now what?

The surgeon makes the incisions on the inner or outer side of the thighs. This is how he proceeds:

Weight Doctors® RESHAPE surgical team at the operating table
  • Incisions according to findingsInner and outer lifts differ above all in the placement of the incisions – the inner lift starts at the groin, the outer lift tightens the contour of the whole thigh. Both together are also possible.
  • Suctioning fat, if necessaryIn some cases, liposuction complements the lift so that the contour becomes more harmonious.
  • Tightening and suturingThe remaining skin is tightened and carefully sutured; depending on the extent, drains carry away wound fluid and reduce swelling and bruising.

Who is the thigh lift an option for?

The excess skin affects more than appearance. It can chafe when walking, irritate the skin and lead to infections in the skin folds. The procedure is often carried out after significant weight loss, but also with age-related excess skin: with age, the risk of such sagging areas of skin on the thighs and buttocks increases. These factors point in favour of a thigh lift:

Patient adviser in the Weight Doctors® consultation room
  • After a bariatric operation or successful weight loss, loose, sagging areas of skin have remained on the thighs, which can no longer be reduced through diet and exercise.
  • The skin causes discomfort such as chafing when walking or skin irritation.
  • Your weight is stable and your general health is good.
  • You have realistic expectations of the result.
  • What you need to bear in mind before, during and after the operation, we discuss in detail in the consultation.

Procedure of the thigh lift

From the first consultation to aftercare – this is how your thigh lift proceeds:

Nurse preparing the instruments for the procedure
  1. Consultation and planningA plastic surgeon discusses your history and your goals and examines the skin and tissue of your thighs. In the treatment plan, he determines the technique – inner lift, outer lift or a combination of both – and explains the risks and healing.
  2. PreparationA blood test takes place before the procedure. You receive guidance on diet and medication, avoid alcohol and nicotine and arrange help for the first days.
  3. SurgeryYou come to the clinic on an empty stomach. Your surgeon discusses the procedure with you once more and marks the areas to be treated; then the anaesthesia is started, generally a general anaesthetic. The procedure takes 1.5–3 hours.
  4. After surgeryDressings and compression garments care for the legs. You are monitored in the clinic for a few hours; in some cases you stay one night. Any pain is treated with painkillers according to medical instructions.
  5. AftercareYou wear the compression garment around the clock for several weeks. Your surgeon arranges regular check-up appointments and gives you precise advice on wound care – you keep the incisions clean and dry.

After surgery: step by step back to everyday life

Step by step, you return to everyday life. This is how healing typically proceeds:

  1. Day of surgeryProcedure under general anaesthesia1.5–3 hours, followed by a few hours of monitoring.
  2. first few daysRest and walkCompression around the clock; gentle walks promote circulation.
  3. 2–3 weeksBack to everyday lifeLighter activities are possible again.
  4. 6–8 weeksBack to sportStrenuous activities and sport after agreement with your doctor.
  5. after monthsThe final resultThe skin has adapted to the new contours – sometimes it takes up to a year.

In specialist hands: how the procedure is made safe

At Weight Doctors® RESHAPE, your thigh lift is carried out by specialists in plastic and aesthetic surgery with experience in lifts after significant weight loss.

Like any operation, the thigh lift carries risks: swelling, bruising, infections and uneven skin contours, rarely thromboses or wound healing disorders. They can be reduced above all by good preparation, monitoring after the operation and consistent aftercare with compression, walks instead of exertion and all check-up appointments.

How effective is a thigh lift after a bariatric procedure?

Studies and the experience of many patients show that a thigh lift after successful weight loss can considerably improve the overall aesthetic and functional result. A bariatric operation causes fatty tissue to shrink, but loose skin often remains on the thighs – the lift corrects this, for a smoother, firmer contour.

Many gain in well-being, self-esteem and quality of life as a result. Results vary from person to person. The aim is a result that convinces aesthetically and functionally – you make the decision carefully and together with a specialised doctor.

For the result to last, a stable weight is important – with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Support is offered, for example, by Weight Doctors® 360° nutrition coaching.

Several areas or mainly fat?

Whether a thigh lift alone is the right path depends on where skin has remained – and whether it is more a matter of skin or of fat:

Weight Doctors® surgeon in the operating theatre
  • Abdomen, buttocks or hips too?If the skin has become loose in several places, a body lift can tighten thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen in one procedure. For the arms, there is the arm lift.
  • Stubborn fat on the legsIf it is less a matter of skin than of fat, liposuction may be an option. If the distribution of fat remains abnormal despite weight loss, lipoedema may be behind it.

What does a thigh lift cost – and what does the German health insurance pay?

The cost of a thigh lift depends on your medical indication and the extent of the procedure; it starts at about €6,500. You receive an exact cost estimate after the personal initial consultation.

German statutory health insurers generally do not cover aesthetic-plastic procedures such as the thigh lift, as they are considered not medically necessary. Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, however, there is a chance of cost coverage – the procedure must then be necessary for medical reasons, not only for aesthetic ones. The following may be recognised:

Weight Doctors® patient adviser at a laptop
  • Severe physical complaintsThe excess skin leads to recurrent skin inflammation, fungal infections in the skin folds or restrictions in movement.
  • Psychological burdenA proven, considerable psychological burden may also, in some circumstances, count as a reason; it usually has to be documented by specialist reports.

The application must set out the medical necessity in detail and is supported by your treating doctor; additional reports or certificates can improve the prospects. You do not have to submit it yourself: we take care of the application and all documents entirely. Each application is examined individually – you can appeal against a rejection.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Weight Doctors® RESHAPE thigh lift

Your question isn’t listed? Your specialist will take time for it during the consultation.

How long does a thigh lift take?

Depending on the extent, the operation takes 1.5–3 hours and generally takes place under general anaesthesia. If inner and outer lifts are combined or fat is also suctioned, it usually takes longer.

Can I go home on the same day after the thigh lift?

Often yes. After the procedure, you are monitored in the clinic for a few hours until you have recovered well. In some cases you stay one night for observation.

Inner or outer thigh lift – what is the difference?

In the inner lift (medial lift), the incision runs along the groin to the inner side of the thigh; it is suitable for excess skin in the upper inner area. The outer lift (lateral lift) needs larger incisions from the groin to the outer thigh, sometimes as far as the hip, and tightens the contour of the whole thigh. The two can be combined.

Is fat also suctioned during a thigh lift?

In some cases, yes: the lift is then combined with liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue and shape the contour more harmoniously. In the case of lipoedema, however, a separate treatment is needed.

When does a thigh lift make sense?

When, after a bariatric operation or successful weight loss, loose, sagging skin remains on the thighs, which can no longer be reduced through diet and exercise – especially if it chafes when walking or irritates the skin. With age, too, the risk of such areas of skin on the thighs and buttocks increases. Your weight should be stable; the procedure is not intended for weight loss.

How do I prepare for the thigh lift?

A blood test comes before the procedure. Your surgeon tells you which medication to continue or stop and gives advice on diet, and you refrain from alcohol and nicotine. Arrange support for the first days, because you will be physically restricted.

How long do I have to wear compression after the thigh lift?

Several weeks around the clock, except when showering. The compression garment controls swelling, helps the skin adapt to the new contours and reduces the risk of complications.

When can I do sport again after the thigh lift?

Gentle walks are good for circulation and healing as early as the first days. You usually resume lighter everyday activities after 2–3 weeks, strenuous activities and sport after about 6–8 weeks – in each case following your doctor’s instructions.

How long does healing take, and when can the result be seen?

Swelling and bruising subside in the first weeks. The final result usually shows after three to six months, sometimes only after a year, when the skin has adapted to the new contours. Results vary from person to person. Until then, avoid strenuous activities. For scar care, your doctor recommends special creams or treatments.

Will scars remain after a thigh lift?

Yes. With the inner lift, the scar lies at the groin and the inner side of the thigh; with the outer lift, it extends further outwards, sometimes as far as the hip. Your surgeon discusses its course with you beforehand; for care, he recommends special creams or treatments.

What risks and side effects can a thigh lift have?

As with any surgical procedure, risks and side effects are possible: swelling, bruising, infections and uneven skin contours, and in rare cases thromboses or wound-healing disorders. Choosing an experienced specialist and careful aftercare can reduce the risk; it is important to follow all medical instructions closely. Your doctor will inform you about possible risks and complications before the procedure.

What should I look for when choosing a doctor for a thigh lift?

Look for a specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery with extensive experience in thigh lifts, particularly after significant weight loss. Check qualifications and certifications. Open, trusting communication is also important, so that your needs and expectations are taken into account.

What does a thigh lift cost?

Treatment costs start at about €6,500. How high they are for you depends on the medical indication and the extent of the procedure; you receive an exact cost estimate after the personal initial consultation. All prices at a glance: Costs & prices.

Does the German health insurance pay for a thigh lift?

Only if it is medically necessary – for example in the case of recurrent skin inflammation, fungal infections in the skin folds or restrictions in movement. Approval is not guaranteed. You can read how the application works above in the guide under “Costs & German health insurance”.
