With a medical indication in line with the guidelines, the German health insurer can cover a stomach reduction. Who is entitled, how the MMK programme works and why you do not have to submit an application.

“After years in a traditional obesity centre, the difference is enormous: at Weight Doctors, patients are not simply sent to different places during the MMK programme. We organise and accompany everything – from nutrition advice and exercise therapy to the psychological assessment. The patient has a personal coach and the Weight Doctors App as a constant companion. No one is alone with the process any more. That is true 360-degree care.”
Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, there is a chance of cost coverage by the German health insurer – for weight-loss surgery with Weight Doctors BARIATRICS® as well as for the endoscopic Weight Doctors SLEEVE®. The requirements are clearly defined:
The MMK (multimodal programme) is a 6-month preparation programme and a key requirement for German statutory health insurance to be able to cover the costs where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines. It combines nutrition counselling, exercise and psychological support into good preparation for your procedure. The MMK itself is not a service provided by the health insurer; we organise all appointments for you. The five pillars:
There is no application to the German health insurer. Your part is manageable: you contact us, choose the suitable treatment together with your doctor and confirm it as binding. After that it continues in four steps:
For you this means: no paperwork and a surgery date that is fixed from the beginning. After the MMK programme, the operation takes place on the planned date.
After the procedure a new chapter begins: the preparation is complete, now it is about aftercare. Your personal Weight Doctors® 360° Coach supports you with:
With the upcoming certification, we are aligning with the prescribed standards of structured aftercare. Until then, you will be supported according to our proven care concept.
With Weight Doctors® you have a partner who takes care of the organisational side: the complete MMK programme, the final check of all requirements and coordination with the German health insurer – without a prior application. After a comprehensive consultation, the structured 6-month programme and a gentle procedure, you can start into a healthier future. You can read more on the requirements under Stomach reduction with health insurance.

Your question isn’t listed? Your specialist will take time for it during the consultation.
The multimodal programme (MMK) is a 6-month preparation programme with five pillars: nutrition counselling (5 sessions), exercise log, psychological evaluation, gastroscopy and full blood count. It is a requirement for cost coverage, but is not itself a service provided by the German health insurer. We organise all appointments for you.
No. There is no prior application at Weight Doctors®: we organise the MMK programme, check all requirements before the operation and take care of the coordination with your German health insurer. If the requirements are met, billing takes place directly after the procedure.
Recognised are, among others, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea syndrome, lipid metabolism disorders, coronary heart disease, osteoarthritis, reflux disease (GERD, heartburn), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and other conditions recognised by the DGAV.
With a primary indication – a BMI of 50 or above, or a BMI of 35 or above with fully treated type 2 diabetes – surgery without a prior MMK is possible. Otherwise the 6-month MMK programme is a requirement for cost coverage by German health insurance.
As a rule, no: your surgery date is set in the consultation. After the MMK programme is completed, the procedure takes place on the planned date.
Your personal Weight Doctors® 360° Coach – from day one, through the MMK programme, the operation and lifelong aftercare. In addition there is private medical care from our specialists and the Weight Doctors® App.

Anyone who pays for their treatment themselves can often declare the costs as an extraordinary burden in their income tax return. Requirements, pitfalls and the steps at a glance.
