  • Early dumping shows shortly after eating, late dumping 1–3 hours afterwards as low blood sugar; many people have mixed forms.
  • The diagnostics – dumping score, glucose tolerance test, endoscopy – determine the form and cause.
  • The first step is always adjusted eating habits; if that is not enough, the connection is reduced endoscopically or the bypass is adjusted surgically.
  • In proven dumping that does not respond to therapy, there is a chance of cost coverage by German health insurance – without prior application.

    Via the A4 or A44, take the A544 feeder road at the Aachen interchange as far as Europaplatz. From there continue on the B1, and after about 500 metres go straight on to Petersstraße – this leads directly into the centre of Aachen to the Katschhof, right next to the cathedral.

    Within 2 to 5 minutes’ walk: Parkhaus am Dom (Jesuitenstr. 10), Parkhaus Büchel (Büchel 43) and Parkhaus am Rathaus (Mostardstr. 5).

  • By train & public transport

    Use the Elisenbrunnen stop – from there it is only a 2 to 3 minute walk to the Katschhof. Several bus lines run directly from Aachen Hauptbahnhof to Elisenbrunnen.

What is dumping syndrome?

A known accompanying effect after a gastric bypass: because food reaches the small intestine more quickly, circulatory and digestive complaints can occur after eating – from nausea and a racing heart to low blood sugar. It occurs in only some patients and can be treated.

What is the difference between early and late dumping?

Early dumping is caused by emptying into the small intestine too quickly and shows shortly after eating. Late dumping is based on reactive low blood sugar and comes 1–3 hours later. Many people have mixed forms.

After which meals do the symptoms occur?

Above all after sweet or carbohydrate-rich meals. After the bypass, the body reacts more sensitively to sugar and fast carbohydrates.

Is dumping syndrome dangerous?

The symptoms can range up to weak spells and circulatory collapse, and many people avoid meals or social situations out of fear. Have recurring symptoms checked rather than putting up with them.

Does dumping syndrome go away?

In many people it improves considerably with a targeted change in diet. If that is not enough, the anatomical causes – for example an anastomosis that is too wide – can be corrected endoscopically or surgically.

Can dumping be treated without an operation?

Often yes. The first step is always conservative therapy with a fixed meal structure and little sugar. If that does not help sufficiently, a gentle endoscopic reduction of the connection is often possible – without an open operation.
